Abstract
Masseter muscle hypertrophy (MMH) may be unilateral or bilateral. The sexual pre dominence of MMH is not comfirmed. The etiology of this anormaly is still unexplained.
The main complaints of individuals with MMH are of an esthetic nature due to facial asymmetry or too broad a face if bilateral hypertrophy is present. Commonly the patient presents with a unilateral or bilateral swelling of slow onset, which is
often
unnoticed by the patient unless pointed out to him. Pain is one of a symptoms of not, but most frequently the clinician is consulted for cosmetic reasons and some individuals also complain of mild pain or tension in the region of the
hypertrophied
muscle, or mild limitation on attempted mouth opening. The most important diagnostic maneuver is to place a finger on the mass and have the patient clench his teeth forcibly. In instances of masseter muscle hypertrophy the obvious and decided
bulging of
the mass become evident. Treatment of choice is surgical correction and excision of the internal layer of the masseter muscle and reduction of the thickened bone in the region of the mandibular angle, via an intraoral approach.
The 21-years old man visited to our department for esthetic treatment of square face. The prominent mandibular angle was first identified ar middle school age and there was no history of trauma, trismus or difficulty with mastication or speech.
Examination of the mandibular enlargement revealed a soft, nontender, contractile mass limited to the region overlying the lower half of the mandibular ramus and was shown a prominent bony spur on both mandibular angle in panorama. And then a
diagnosis
of masseter hypertrophy was made and we performed surgical removal of prominent bony spur (left. Side: 1 cm, right, side: 2 cm) and hypertrophied masseter muscle. The patient satisfied with result of surgery and postoperative complication was not
present.
